DTF (Direct-to-Film) TRANSFERS

DTF transfers are designs printed on a special film that can be applied to a wide range of fabrics. Unlike other common methods, like sublimation, where ink is pressed directly into the material, DTF involves printing the design on special transferable film before applying. The printing process allows for high-quality and vibrant transfers of designs onto apparel like shirts, hoodies, hats, can coolers, etc.

DTF is often compared to heat-transfer vinyl. While they are similar in the aspect that they are heat pressed onto the material, they are very different. DTF is longer-lasting, more durable, more vibrant, and will not peel or crack if applied to the material correctly. DTF can be washed and dried, but it is recommended to do so with as little heat as possible. DTF is also thinner feeling, more flexible, and softer to the touch than vinyl making it less stiff on the material.

SUBLIMATION

Sublimation printing is special ink printed on special paper from a special printer and then heat pressed onto specific materials. Sublimation is more restricted on what it can be applied to which makes it less commonly used on apparel. Higher polyester count material /is recommended and cannot be pressed on 100% cotton or material that has a high cotton percentage. Material must also be light colored. However, sublimation is favored when making items such as tumblers/cups, foam can coolers, polyester bags, etc. Many items can be prepped to have a sublimation friendly coating.

Sublimation printers do not print white and all sublimation ink is transparent. A good way to think of sublimation printing is like writing with a marker on material. The results you would get with writing on a black shirt with a marker is the same you would get from a sublimation printer. Due to the ink being transparent, whatever color you are pressing onto will be the base color of your design, and will also be what shows where there is any white in the design. The printer will just not print ink where there is white, meaning there will be no ink pressed onto the material in those spots.

Why DTF is often better than sublimation:

  1. Works on any fabric color or type – DTF can be used on cotton, polyester, blends, dark shirts, and light shirts. Sublimation only works well on light-colored polyester - Not Cotton!
  2. Brighter, more solid colors – Because the ink sits on the fabric, colors stay bold and vibrant, even on dark materials.
  3. Durable and washable – DTF prints hold up well through many washes without fading or cracking.
  4. No special coating needed – The shirt doesn’t need to be treated first, making DTF simpler for many designs.
  5. Fine details and gradients – It handles detailed artwork and colorful graphics very well.

In short:

👉 DTF = versatile, bright, durable, and works on

👉 Sublimation = great for light colored polyester or sublimation friendly coated items, but limited otherwise.
